Joe Livernois was raised in the Imperial Valley and attended Humboldt State University. He returned to El Centro to work for the Imperial Valley Press for three years before coming to Monterey County in 1977.
He was a reporter for several weekly newspapers in Monterey County and was hired by the Monterey County Herald in 1981 as a copy editor. He was a reporter, a columnist, a city editor and a bureau chief with the Herald, and was named the executive editor in 2008. He has been a columnist for the Carmel Pine Cone and a freelance writers since 2012.
Joe has severed on numerous community boards, clubs and organizations. He is currently board president of the Monterey County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
He lives in Prunedale with his wife, Loma. They have two grown sons, Josh and Jeren, and a granddaughter, Ruby.
